RIO Center's Department of Research and Publications has released a labour market assessment examining the gap between the skills held by recent Somali graduates and those sought by employers in Mogadishu.
The study surveyed 412 recent graduates and 87 employers across six sectors: health, education, finance, telecommunications, construction, and public administration.
Key findings
Employers consistently identified practical application, digital competence, and professional communication as the areas where graduate preparation falls shortest of workplace requirements. Graduates, in turn, reported limited exposure to practical work during their studies.
The report recommends closer curriculum consultation between universities and employers, expanded internship provision, and integration of digital and communication skills across degree programmes rather than as standalone modules.
