RIO Center has opened applications for the 2026 RIO Innovation Challenge, an annual competition inviting young innovators to propose and prototype solutions to pressing Somali challenges.
The Challenge is open to students, recent graduates, and young professionals working individually or in teams of up to four. Submissions may address any challenge in education, health, the economy, the environment, technology, or public service delivery.
What shortlisted teams receive
Shortlisted teams are paired with a mentor from RIO Center's Department of Innovation and Technology and receive access to the Digital Innovation Laboratory for prototype development. Teams also receive structured support in user research, prototyping, and pitch preparation.
Finalists present their solutions at RIO Demo Day in front of an audience of institutions, potential clients, and investors.
How to apply
Submit your idea through the innovation idea form on this website. Your submission should describe the problem you have identified, who is affected by it, and your proposed solution. You do not need a finished product — a clearly articulated idea is enough to enter.
Every submission receives a reference number you can quote when following up.
